Strange damage

Last hour I was testing damage/thac0 functionality. Now I don´t know whether this is bug or I really forgot/never understood the game mechanics.

My ranger should make damage 5-11 with bastard sword. When I try to attack Imoen, 95% of the time he made 7 damage and 5% of the time 6 damage. What is even more strange is that he made the same damage with every other weapon (even the ones without proficiency points) except fists. On the other hand Imoen several times managed to make even bigger damage with her bow than she is supposed to make, making her better fighter than my ranger :) . I tried it like 30 times. Always same results.

    As I said, I don´t know whether it is bug or me missing something.

    It sounds like just a string of bad luck to me. What's your difficulty set at, though?

    Did some testing. Fortunately it only affects party members. I created new character and again, I couldn´t make more than 7 damage to Imoen, more than 8 damage to Montaron and more than 3 damage to Xzar, but when attacking enemies, damage worked as it should. Maybe it is intent? So you won´t gib your party members...

    I know extreme tiredness causes minimum damage. Maybe that was it.

    The character wasn´t tired.

    Also, when we are at it, what are diferences between difficulties? In the options it states that only in damage. But when I changed it to hard, in the first map I encountered Dire Wolf instead of regular Wolf and Diseased Gibberling instead of regular one.

    Encounter difficulty is part of it too. Also, core rules and above make chunking possible.
