Drat, I might just loose my sorcerer and go straight Mage then
Though you will know less spells as a sorcerer (your spell selection is much smaller) compared to a mage you can cast more often between rests. Its your call, but if you are new to the game (or haven't played in a long time which seems more likely) I'm inclined to tell you to go with a mage over a sorcerer just so you can test out spells.
If you are new to the game, or not very familiar with the magic in the Baldur's Gate series, you're better off with a Mage. However, there really is no character more powerful than a well-planned sorcerer, when it comes to the end-game. In BG1, most of a spellcaster's power comes from using wands, anyway, so the distinction isn't all that important. A sorcerer doesn't need to memorize spells ahead of time, and therefore is much more adaptable mid-combat. Plus, there really aren't that many spells at each spell level you need to know to be successful, and any unusual situations can easily be covered by using scrolls. If you plan to solo a spellcaster, it is important to bear in mind that scrolls of high-level spells are not available for much of the game, whereas a sorcerer can choose any spell he wants as he levels-up. Heck, you could Gate in pit fiends to slaughter everybody in Candlekeep if you remove the level cap (and grind an absurd number of experience points).
Just keep in mind that you need to know exactly what spells to choose if you want to build a successful sorcerer, and that requires detailed knowledge of every major encounter in the entire series. Then again, you could just bring along a mage in your party to cover your sorcerer's weaknesses, but that means less exp for your sorcerer, and therefore a longer wait before you become a living god.
Semi off-topic...but anyone else feel as if the chance to learn a spell is bugged? 17 intelligence and it's more like 35%....I know i can change the difficulty, but I don't think i should have to

Yeah I've noticed that myself, and seen others mention it as well. I'm playing a bard with 18 Int (85% chance to learn spell) and I seem to fail roughly 50% of the time...
