Montaron can be good at pick pockets, as he starts with the good halfling bonus to this. I don't use pick pockets much, though, especially if playing an evil party, as just kill my pick pocket targets if the pick pocket fails
If you pick up an NPC thief early enough you can specialise them in any thief skill you want. Imoen's the usual choice because you get her at level 1 automatically. Safana's available at level 2 though, or you could dual class Shar-Teel to thief and set up all her abilities according to your needs.
You can have Xzar dual class into thief with a tome of dexterity if I am not mistaken. But that would be a rather radical change. Or any mage can cast Knock spell to open locks. Never recruited Skie, though you need to have Eldoth to have her, I do not know if she has decent lockpicking ability.

Not talking about pickpockets, im asking about lockpicking. I am a ftr/thf and specializing in pickpocketing myself.
Is there any reason at all to specialize in pickpocketing?
That depends on your play style. If you're willing to save/reload until you are successful at pickpocketing, then you don't need to get it super high. Also, from what I remember there are only a few really good items to pickpocket throughout the whole game, so if you're meta-gamey enough you could just look at a guide to find these targets, and then chug a couple potions of master thievery to steal from them. But overall no, not a critical skill by any means.
There are only very few good items, which can sometimes also acquired by the proper quest-chain. Though those steps are usually better off skipped and the item can then be pick pocketed. Random stuff is usually ring, cloak or amulet of prot +1 .. but there are more than enough from a quest. (or hidden loot). For 1 quest if you take to long or prefer to kill the NPC, you can't get the shield (tower +1 / +4 missile) but a thief can and a very very VERY nice cloak can also be stolen. I think the latter is part of a quest, but it's easier to just steal it if you already have done the quest.
Oh, you can get a nice couple of scimitars +3 as well
Usually 50~ is enough, there are enough potions to boost it. For Durlags Tower you'd better by getting trap detection to at least 90 ^^ Lock picking I usually go with 85-90, have found only 1 container, which I could not get open in Baldurs Gate/west. But I think there was only crap inside as usual...

Sorry, I misread your post. Safana is good for open locks
I love pickpokceting. No it is not a critical skill to have but I personally enjoy it. Its very fun to steal your party some nice gear early and saving money for you in the long run.
Monty is my one and only thief and he is doing both lock pick and traps and he also kick ass and chew bubble gum. He also have nice stealth because of the shadow armor and boots. He is such a great little dude
