Avenger?

So, i plan to have Edwin and Neera in my party.

At first i was gonna play a Wild Mage or a Sorcerer myself.

But when checking through the class list and kits, i noticed the Avenger.. is it more like an offensive\spellcasting Druid? Do i have to rely on shapeshifting, since it seems to get a few unique ones?

Never played a Sorcerer but would just want it for all out blasting stuff, can the Avenger do this? I've played a Druid in the past, but only in NWN.

The sword spider form is pretty brokenly powerful in BG1 (It's immune to web which is always awesome to have), and decent for early BG2. They do get quite a few more offensive spells then the typical druid, (lightning bolt, chaos, and chain lightning are pretty decent) and improved invisibility is quite awesome defensively...

However, big blasters they are not. More so then the average druid, but not by much.

Once you get the Improved Shapeshifts, they really are powerful, as already mentioned. Cast Iron Skins and Improved invisibility pre-battle, send web and transform to sword spider (which can poison btw) - Mages can't hit you, webbed targets can't hit you and even if they can, you'll be immune to all physical attacks for a couple of strikes.

Also, Chromatic orb on the Avenger's level 10 petrifies targets - only bards are able to do that with the BGEE current cap.

Kits will probably be rebalanced though, both in BGEE and also for mid-late BG2EE. I mean, I don't see why not, Avengers aren't really any good in BG2 - ok for support, not really ok for the rest though.

Cheers. Seems i'd get more blasting out of a Sorcerer then. Still the Avenger has me curious, i might have to play one anyway. Can i play an Avenger "well" without relying on the shapeshift forms then? Or is the Sword Spider essential and core to the kit?

As far as my experience with avenger in BGEE goes, sword spider form isn't immune to web (I had to mod back this immunity) and does not poison. Baby wyvern form poisons target. Fire Salamander form is hasted and has firebreath 3x times. But these forms are buggy, AC not displayed correctly and I think THACO too.

Overall I don't get the feeling he is too much overpowered. He is cool and very fun.

The problem with the orb though is the +6 save bonus...you have to Doom and GM just to get rid of that and have a chance on all but the lowest level enemies. More often then not, literally, any other other spell you could memorize is better then chromatic orb.

CO is my all time favorite spell not counting MM. I see that as an awsome bonus, so i don't mind using it.
