Bg1 Multiplayer (Not EE)

Does anyone actually have any, if at all, definite advice or actions as to get it to work over a GameRanger or Hamaichi network? (Have yet to try Hamaichi. Some people just don't like certain things, unfortunately!)
So far all I've gotten in Bg1: ToTSC Multi over GameRanger, is entering the game and not being detected for the Game Player's character creation, I appear in-game to everyone else and then a minute later I get the boot. If I host, same problem, except I can't see anyone in my lobby. So I assume it's down to me? Any, ANY, help will be VERY much appreciated!
