The Black Pits (does my party need a thief?)/(Do I need a guy with high charisma?)

Are there traps and stuff on the battlefield? Is there anything to pickpocket? Are there any shops to buy things from?

Haven't finished it, but so far there are no traps or conversations. Its pure combat as far as i can tell, you can buy stuff after each fight. You don't get loot, only money to buy more gear\ammo.
  • I've encountered one fight with traps in it so far, but was able to stumble through it without disarming them.

I made a gnome thief/illusionist just in case.

High charisma (up to 20) will get you a shop discount, which helps to squeeze out a little more gear from your winnings. Though if you have a mage with friends you could just cast it several times, since you can rest as much as you want in the lobby (14 charisma is enough for one friends to do the trick, or 8 for 2)

I've actually just restarted the black pits (made a couple bad characters) and I see absolutely no difference in prices regardless if I use a guy with 20 (thief/illusionist with 14 charisma + friends) or 3 charisma. I think the prices are fixed.

The high CHA character has to be in the lead postion.

Charisma and thieves aren't really a necessity. It's kind of difficult to hide in shadows and backstab in the arena unless you have invisibility spell or potions. Plus there was only one fight where traps were a pain (does this constitute as a spoiler? if so my apologies, please ignore this.) And I didn't see much difference (if at all) in terms of dialogue/shop prices b/c of my charisma. Granted I did beat the pits with a party of 4 fighters and 2 clerics so maybe I was getting the short end of the stick. Guess I'll have to play it again...woe is me =P

@Night_Watch Just to touch on the Rogue thing, a Swashbuckler doesn't backstab but could be loaded up with Find Traps. They're basicly slightly weaker fighters but with full thief skill progression. And it sounds like, from what you said, you'd need serious sneaking chops to backstab reliably in the arena, so no real loss there.

High charisma is good for buying stuff.. you don't get nearly as much gold as you need in the higher rounds and i ended up having to beat the game with mostly +1 stuff

@CaptRory you are correct. I forgot to take the swashbuckler into account. whenever I hear that class I immediately think of this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GI6CfKcMhjY I dunno why...

but ya, probably a dual/multi class thief would be more effective than a pure one for this area. but that's just me. others may find ways to properly utilize that class.

    @Night_Watch Bah, he's a poser.

When I think Swashbuckler, I go to the original.

@Night_Watch Thanks! =3 It is one of my all time favorite movies. I used to rent it all the time on VHS, hehehe. Now I have it on DVD. They don't make movies like that anymore.

They don't make any good movies anymore

It's the same problem with games. There is a increasing focus on graphics/special effects and the writing suffers for it, which once the special effects/graphics are dated is all people care about.

There's also a problem with how things age:

You look around and see a house. And someome says "That house is 300 years old!" And someone else says "They don't make 'em like they used to!" and you point out that all the crappy houses built 300 years ago fell down already so only the super-over engineered ones are still standing. It's the same thing with movies, the bad forgettable ones are forgotten and people point to the awesome ones.

There still are some good movies made. Even accounting for individual taste I think the Lord of the Rings trilogy is going to be held up as three of the best movies of the era. Appaloosa was real good.

Anyway I think we're getting way afield of the original topic, hehehe.

yeah i disagree with the games argument because there are a truckload of old crappy games... some of the worst games in history are the older ones.. (im looking at you FMVs).

As for movies.. I don't believe i've seen a good movie since Donnie Darko :/

I do have a strange taste for movies though

Well that's my point with games. There are a lot of really fun older games. Baldur's Gate qualifies as one of them now hehe. There's old classics like Civilization, Colonization, Master of Orion, Master of Magic... The really bad ones have fallen by the wayside though so we tend to remember the ones we loved.

@CaptRory Anything that can withstand the test of time and can gain a nod of respect at its mere mention gets a thumbs up in my book.

So ya, I pretty much agree with you. d(^-^)b

@Riolathel Donnie Darko was cool. Have you seen the one about his sister? (I haven't btw, I was just wondering)

Only one thief encounter, and that one is better countered with the level 2 cleric spell find traps if you ask me.

Clerics are also kinda dull in this campaign.

Casters and fighters are the key.
