Which items do I have to keep?

TeflonTeflon Member, Translator (NDA) Posts: 515
Does anyone know which items I have to keep for convenience? For example I heard I'll need 2 angel skin rings to get an quest completed(inside baldurs gate)

Is there any other items you remember recommended not to sell or discard?
Thanks in advance :)

Bandit scalps, Ankheg shells, Wyvern heads; all are worth significant money to the right npc. Anything that happens to have a name, yet looks like a normal, basic item. A couple quests send you looking for named items that are otherwise unremarkable, like Perdue's Short Sword.

The notes from assassins aren't worth keeping, either. I generally stick them in a barrel because I'm OCD that way

Reedmilfam funny you'd mention the bounties. I did discover you can sell them to some merchants, but it occurs to me that is really terrible role playing! Seriously, would you want a bounty on your head in general circulation?!

And what sort of merchant would purchase a bounty notice, let alone from the person it describes?

Used paper in the 15th centery would still of some value, since paper was exspnive and in short supply. most people could not read or write those that could mostly used slates. Paper was a rare luxuery for the elite.

Well...would YOU not give a guy trying to pawn his own bounty notice some gold to move him along, especially noting the rapidly increasing price on his head?

Selling a letter offering a reward on you own head to anyone seem like fun to me.
    @Teflon:
Keep the golden pantalons... You wont need them now, but if you keep them until BG2...
There is also a belt you should NOT give to the person inside of the friendly arm (or get it back by killing him) becaus it is useful.

Hell yeah. "Self-Defence" is the best way to get legitimate loot.

    Okay so bottom line,
Do not SELL : things with names on it, pantalon, girdle

other than that ok to sell.
Thanks for info. I really wondered letters(bounty and riddles) are some kind of quest item :)

There are only two scrolls you will actually need at some point in the game, and both of them actually tell you to hold onto them in their descriptions. Apart from that, you'll need an angel skin ring and a sphene gem for quests in Baldur's Gate city. Most of the rest of the quest-related items tend to be fairly obvious, if you notice the name. Just keep an eye out for unusual drops, like gnolls with short swords or ankhegs with daggers.

    What is special about it?

One of the girdles you get from the fetish ogre. It's a quest item (though is well worth hanging onto instead).

It's not that important anymore, since you get duplicates from nearly any other girdle, and piercing weapons are your least problem. I'd rather go with slashing/bludgeoning protection for your frontline and missile-boots for mage&co.

FOr the Bandit scalps: as long as you have them and can sell at least 1 of them, you might combine it with maybe Wyvern heads :) I heard, there is a cave somewhere, where they popup nearly every rest, and each is well worth 1000 gold. [but you have to sell 1 scalp + xx wyvern heads, else she vanishes] And they are lighter than those Ankheg shells, so you typically only want the armor ... (cause winter wolf pelts give you also 500g and are lighter + 974xp)

    else..hmm

But the minor stuff like angel skin ring or the dagger/sword from the ankheg at the entry of BG is really only very very additional. You'd be better off resting/farming the XP/money somewhere else, as those quests give you 900xp at the most.

The only real item to hold onto are the golden pantaloons, if you plan to import your character in BG2.

The bonus is you can pick it up a level 1. And at low levels I find missile protection (especially around the bandit areas) to be pretty lifesaving. YMMV.

As has been mentioned, you need one angel skin ring, and one sphene gem, both are needed in the city of Baldur's Gate. You will also want to save a copy of the Unicorn Run book - someone in Baldur's Gate will ask you for it, and it might be a pain to find if you don't remember where you saw it. There is one other book that is needed for a quest, but you can buy it across the street from the quest giver.

If you find a Spider Body and don't have a quest for it, keep it, it will despawn if you try to go back for it later.

Everything else typically has a unique name.
