Ok I got the stats out of the way. What about Proficiency points? I put 2 in short sword, 1 in scimitar and 1 in crossbow. Was that a good setup or no?
I generally prefer long bows over crossbows, but short swords are pretty great for stalkery stabby stuff. I don't remember if BG1 had a Short Sword of Backstabbing - I sort of have this distinct memory that it might have had, but I'm not sure... if it does, then that's great, and if it doesn't, you'll still have plenty of other good magic short swords to plunge into your enemies' backs.
Well, you can always just take away the off-hand weapon when you're about to shoot things - it's what I do for Coran - but if that's too much of a hassle a sling is a pretty good option too. There are some good ones in the game.
What race is your stalker? If an elf, a long/composite or shortbow might be better, due to the elf +1 THAC0 bonus. Shortswords are okay for your main weapon, though Scimitars (which includes Ninjatos and Wakizashis - offering both piercing and slashing damage, respectively) are also viable in BGEE, which includes some magic ones, but I would focus on just one of Shortswords or Scimitars and put the proficiency point "saved" into either bows or single weapon style (for the extra critical chance and AC buff) or dual-wielding (to take it to 3 points)
Longbows are better most of the time, since they give more attacks/round. But special magical bolts pack quite a punch. (bolts of biting and those electrical bolts do good damage)
When backstabbing, weapon speed factor and base enchantment level are the most important things. A dagger+3 is a better backstabbing weapon than a longsword+1 IMHO. Since the faster the attack speed you have more chance to land the attack before the enemy turns or walks away, and increase in minimum damage is almsot always better than increase in maximum damage. On that note, short swords are very good as they are fast and there are good enchanted ones.
I would also take a proficiency in bludgeoning weapons (flail or mace). Sure, you can't backstab with them. But they are excellent when you come across skeletal undead. Plus some of these have great mods later in the game (Flail of the Ages). You even might want to consider hammers in the long run (Crom Faeyr).
It kinda does make the game a bit easier....but to each his own. I'll forget about the two weapon style and focus on short sword, dagger and long sword.
Finished a playthrough with a stalker. I started with longswords since there are so many, and another point in longbow. By the time the game ended I had two points in scimitar as well, since I wanted to play with some of the more "exotic" weapons in Amn.

Rashad's Talon works for that too.
What's so hard about all this?
