A few questions

What determines whether a mage is able to write a spell into his mage book?

I don't like how a fighter dualed to mage doesn't wear robes when you equip a robe. Which mods fix this so that I can follow their progress from converting to BGEE?

Intelligence. It determines how many spells you can have and your chance to learn them. At 18 Intelligence you have 85% chance to learn and a maximum of 18 spells per level. 95% at 19 with no max, though you'll need a stat-increasing tome for that.

Intelligence determines whether a mage successfully scribes spells into their book. The chance is 85% at 18 intelligence, for example, and I believe you incur a 10% penalty when scribing spells currently beyond the mage's comprehension. I personally don't like how this is implemented, and usually just reload to scribe or drop the difficulty down to normal before scribing.

Pretty sure a fighter->mage will start showing their robes when the mage's level overtakes the fighter. If not, or if you want to see the robes earlier, it's a simple fix using Shadowkeeper. Just change their model to mage. I do this often with thief/mage multiclasses, since their thief levels are always dominant and I prefer the look of robes, too.

Ah, I guess I just got unlucky then in the black pits when I tried to teach my mage some spells. Thanks @Silverstar and @Madhax !

I think difficulty factors into it as well - on Normal or lower, you have a 100% success rate with spells regardless of intelligence.

Shawne is correct; if you lower the difficulty below Core Rules, which is middle of the slider, you get a 100% chance to learn spells. You can just put it back up after if you prefer. Same works for getting max hit points on a levelup, assuming you do it before ever clicking the levelup button; cancelling out won't do it.
