It was always my understand the Forgotten Realms was heavy on magic. Is this not right?

@Goddard You are correct, ridiculously and insanely correct.

Or, more accurately, the Forgotten Realms has always been ridiculously and insanely glutted with magic, special cosmological systems, and high-power exceptions and enhancements to various rules. If you were to mug a young boy for his lunch, you would loot a +4 sandwich of eating...

I'm amused, but not complaining mind you. Magic items in the Forgotten Realms have always been much more common than elsewhere (except possibly Planescape, but they were also terribly unreliable in Planescape).

So it kind of makes sense that in the midst of an iron problem, everyone who could find a way to afford one would grab a magic weapon (probably just +1, dur to cost), which are mentioned as being immune to the rot multiple times throughout the game.
