Dopplegangers make me laugh

Traipsing through Candlekeep and killing dopplegangers makes me giggle. Does anyone else find their dramatic phrases and ridiculous overconfidence in the face of certain death hilarious?

Frankly, the ridiculous overconfidence is shared by absolutely every minion in this game or the sequel. Remember the first guard you encounter inside the Cloakwood mines?

That guy must have been drunk or something - 6 armed people invade and he thinks he can kick our asses.

The catacombs are an odd mixture of creepiness and hilarity.

To be fair, that seems to be the case in almost every game. Heck, at least in this game they *try* to run away when things get really nasty for them. It's always way too late, but at least they try.

I think difficulty was higher in the original right? I remember doppelgangers as being pretty tough.

I once roleplayed a Lawful Good Paladin who left most of it alone ... but even then I metagamed and grabbed the Tomes. No way was I missing out on a point of strength because of RP concerns in a single-player game.

With non-Lawful characters I've never had any trouble justifying it. You're in a position where magic stuff might save your life from the horrible monsters trying to kill you, and those corpses aren't getting much use out of it.

SCS mod has enhanced them, giving them mirror image, horror and dire charm powers. Not strictly PnP, but appropriate for their general illusion-scary-mind rape themes. They are rather weak in vanilla. They are supposed to be dangerous opponents because of their disguise and cunning, but in the game I don't think any player falls for their tricks.

My PC is all like "shapeshifting is wasted on you idiots! At least turn into an ogre or something" as he cuts them down with Gold Digger.

It is useless for them to resist the power of the child of Bhaal :)

That's why I don't like SCS... It allows itself to do things that are not allowed by rules.

In defense of the mod, SCS very rarely does this. Infact I can't recall another instance of the mod giving an enemy an unfair advantage/power it should not have. (well maybe giant spider's web ability, but that's pretty much all, really) Its scope does not give enemies weird immunities or unexpected powers on a regular basis. (Tactics and Improved Anvil are notorious for this. Like, 'this fighter enemy is immune to backstab, missile damage, breach, lower resistance and dispel magic, has saves of all 0, and his hits knocks back you, and has %10 chance of insta killing you, etc. etc' ) Dopplegangers are an exception, since they are really weak and not even the smartest script can do much to make them a viable challenge. Without this component, they stick out like a sore thumb against other SCS enhanced enemies so something had to be done.

Greater Doppelgangers, on the other hand, are at least to be taken seriously. Their smaller brethren not so much.
