Jupp, fireballed the madman and his skeletons - all dead. But the quest doesn't disappear from the active list. I also remember reading somewhere that the smith in Beregost will give me 4000 gold for killing Bassilus but nope. Is this a bug?

    Go to the temple in the next area over.

    Take his holy symbol to the temple east of Beregost for 5000 gold.
