Importing NPCs to BG2

Sorry if this question has been asked but I haven't played BG2 since it originally came out and I don't remember how this works. If I import the NPCs into BG2 do they keep their stats and such that they earned in BG1 or do they start out vanilla no matter what I did with them. For example I dueled Imoen to a mage, can I import her like that or will she just be some level 10 thief or whatever in BG2? Thanks
