Dual Class fighter bugged?

So if you roll a fighter human (I did with a zerker) and dual class at level 2 you can spend more * points that you should be able too as a cleric or thief or whatever, which is only 1 point.

So basically a fighter level 2 with **(2) in daggers and a thief at level 3 (maybe level 4? I can't remember what level they get weapon skill points) can then continue to put points in daggers as if he were a fighter still...

Is this not supposed to happen? The game is almost acting like its a multi class fighter/thief and not dual class.

    Its not supposed to happen but this behaviour comes from BG2. The developers are aware of the problem but its not a priority.

    Oh, it's much worse than being a Multiclass Fighter/Thief, multiclass can only specialise (no, that doesn't make sense), those 2 levels in Fighter before dualling mean you can eventually Grand Mastery any weapon.

    So is it eventually going to get patched? And if it does and I end up with a high level character will it mess that character up? Just wondering before I invest a lot of time into it.

    I don't understand how it isn't a priority since this makes level 2 fighter dual class far more over powered than anything else.

    Well, its not a priority because its not a new BGEE bug and it doesn't make the game unplayable.

    Even if they fix it I don't think it'll break your character, but I can't really give you a guarantee.

    Nah, the game's pretty robust at handling illegal characters.

    Fighter 2 // X isn't actually too bad, it's just flat out superior to a single class character. Dual classing pretty much does that all the time anyway though.

    This was intended behavior in BG2.
    If these current devs consider this a bug and fix it, a lot of people are gonna be pissed.

    @doomdoomdoom

    How do you know that it was intended behaviour?

    If it is intended then I am a happy camper. If it is not I think Ill roll a half orc assassin...

    Considering it's not allowed in PnP (hell paladin, rangers and multi's can't specialize at all in PnP, and GM doesn't even exist), and wasn't allowed in BG1..I'd say it's a bug for BG2 (and BG:EE inherited it)

    @ZanathKariashi

    Specialisation was available for classes other than pure fighters in the second edition PnP game and grand mastery did also exist. These were rules introduced (for good or ill) in later second edition rulebooks - Player's Option: Combat and Tactics and Player's Option: Skills and Powers.

    I agree with your general point though. In PnP the allocation of proficiency points described by the OP wouldn't be permitted.

    Yeah, I don't have all the extra splat books, just the core ones, and a couple of the complete books that were included in the bundle.

    Additional rulebooks or enhancement editions were/are always 'odd' .. I switched to Battletech after 2nd Ed. but it wasn't any different...evry rule-enhancement or change was either skipped/ignored/adapted or whatever..depending on the DM or the ppl playing it.

    I'll check for the book though, kinda interested in it :P

    I still deny the existence of such a rule, that you can happily advance in your old class - adding prof points beyond the limit in your laid-down fighter class is surely not legitimate.

    It's neither intended nor a bug. It's an EXPLOIT. It has no impact on everyday play, it is simply a loophole that players can use to make their characters more powerful. Since this is a single player game, I see no reason to prioritize fixing it. Either you take advantage of this exploit or you don't, that's your choice.

    And if the developers DO decide to fix it eventually, if you aren't happy, just shadowkeep your proficiency points. It's your game, play it how you want.
