Multi-Character question (control freak)

Ok, I'm intimidated by the 10,000,000 threads here and don't want to spend the next 12 hours sorting through to find the answer to my questions because I am lazy and I have two kids who are screaming at me to get out the door so we can go see The Hobbit movie today.
That being said, I have two major questions about this seemingly wonderful news about Baldurs Gate coming back to life:
1) will we still be able to control the entire party of characters all by our lonesome? One of the hugest reasons I have gone away from fantasy PC games has been the solid trend of the last few years where you must play online multi-player with people you don't know to have a full quest party. I tried NeverWinter Nights and hated it completely for this very reason. To have a true D&D effect, it needs to be a party-based quest. I pray that is still the format in this release.
2) If one wants to play multi-player with only persons of one's choosing, can one do so without being subjected to random interlopers in some bizarre online world where people love to interject themselves into your game because they are pathetic and have no lives? This is a problem with some other online games.
Thanks!

1. Yes, you control the entire party and can customize them to certain extents. Specific party members have unique dialog and associated quests.
2. I have never attempted multi-player but one would assume there is an option for password protected games.
