Clerics/druids and healing

One thing that's always a little sad in computer RPGs is that the constant demand for healing spells means that clerics (and to a lesser extent, druids), in their capacity as spellcasters, become little more than healing machines. Even if you rather fancy one of the other spells, if there's a simple hit-point reviving spell it's likely to be chosen. It doesn't help that some of the more esoteric uses for other spells are difficult to code for. More flexibility could be enabled with a healing-spell-conversion thing like in 3E, making the converted spells a bit weaker. If the game is using specialty priest kits, the convertible spells could vary according to the deity.

Really? I generally use potions, and use most of my cleric spells to ensure that they cannot hit me effectively or I hit them back much harder, the spell conversion idea has worked in the past though.

This is called spontaneous casting. It was available in icewind dale and I think Neverwinter Nights.

Clerics spontaneous casting of healing spells (in version 3.5, Druids also get spontaneous casting, but of animal summoning spells)

Same as @Cadros, Cure light wounds at the very beginning and Heal later are only healing spells that I regularly use, otherwise I memorise a couple so they would be cast on rest. I use clerics to buff and remove harmful effects, and druids even have some offensive options.

Especially in bg1 with more outdoors for lightning (I think they should add a stalactite option for caves etc)
