Lack of magic items?

So it has been some time since I've played the original, so my memories may have been tainted by BGII and TOB.
But I'm finding it difficult to spend my gold. I'm a little bit of a miser, and am reluctant to drop so much gold on the more expensive items when I can't even find a second sling +1? That and I'm starting to exhaust the various supplies of magical arrows and bullets.
Is there a merchant somewhere pre-BG with a wider array of magical equipment? I was a bit disappointed when I made it to Ulgoth's Beard to find little in the way of equipment available.

Nope... but there's a big dungeon called Durlag's Tower that you might find some useful items in...

edit: The smithy in Beregost does have some +1 stuff.. and some more useful items like Shadow Armor and Dagger of Venom

This is low level D&D working as intended.

Enjoy it while you can. By the time you finish ToB everybody and thier wife has a powerful magic item.

BG1 is pretty parsimonious when it comes to magic items, especially compared to BG2. The new NPCs personal quests do have some decent new items though, so give those a try.

Also - speak to Thalantyr in High Hedge west of Beregost, he sells a few nifty items.

It does seem to me that the numbers of magic ranged ammo has been significantly diminished from the original - I seem to recall the Beregost smithy in particular had perhaps unlimited supplies - but then again my memory chips have been known to be faulty on occasion...

Ahh.. I love it. Low level ad&d as it should be.

100 stacks of ten per arrow is pretty close to unlimited... I've never needed anywhere close to that much.

Durlag's is great for magical ammunition once you get level 5-6

For a good laugh install BG+TotSC and load up the "expansion save game" they provide.

Your party is Abdel the hapless fighter, Minsc, Jaheira, Imoen, Viconia, and Edwin. You all have tons of magic items, a good chunk of it unidentified, and since this was with the old stacking limits for ammunition, almost every bag slot for most of the characters is filled with 20-stacks of a variety of ammo. I think one character had one free bag slot and that was it.

When your average party level is 5, I wouldn't call that low level ad&d. In fact it's generally about the sweet spot for my games I find...
I play Pathfinder these days though, so my memory of character wealth by level is probably a bit skewed as well.
I just find it strange that I've got the funds and nothing to spend them on. I understand not wanting to spam the game with powerful equipment, but it's getting to the point that I'm planning on dropping 20k gp on scrolls of fireball and the like...

I beat my most recent game with almost 200k gp stored up. I finally dropped several grand to buy everyone stacks of magic ammunition, but generally the magic items I *find* are better than anything I could buy. That's D&D as it should be. Go adventure, get some loot. That being said... I am really curious about making a two-handed sword specialist that uses the gold-devouring sword you can buy in Baldur's Gate. I would be more excited about the concept if I knew you could find it again in BG2.
