Staff weilding build.

Hey. I finished BG1EE last night with my Sorc and I want my second game to be with a character using a staff. Most likely ending with the staff of striking. I would really love to get some nice ideas for cool builds for staff wielding character.

I know that wizards and sorcs can wield staves but they don't really fight with them. I want a character that will fight with it.

Thank you! :)

    Human Kensai, dualled to Mage?

Regular fighter? Anyone with 5 stars in staves and 2 in two handed will do well

I play a beast master/cleric that uses a staff. but I can tell you the beast master kit has nothing to offer. beside getting find familiar has a special ability at L1. giving you a hefty HP boost and decent little tank/monster.

Stalker/cleric would be much Better I think since the stalker can back stab with the staff.

When I dual from the Stalker? unless it's a multi ranger / cleric (is there such a thing?)

Yeah, I realize that a fighter can do it. But I am looking for something a bit more special. :)

I had a lvl 2-3 mage dualed to fighter who was a staff grandmaster back in the day. Staff of the archmagi (BG2) dispels magic on hit. Combining full armor with other mage specific items and it worked really well.

Could be cook to dual a sorc then. And give him some diffensive spells that he will be able to spam, though I am not sure if you can dual a sorc.

Yes you have to duel class, and once you regain your stalker ablitys you can back stab with the staff. if you duel at L6 you can still be a L8 clarc by the end of the game. but for a BG1 play threw I would duel at L4 so you get to spendmost of the game has a stalker/claric. if you go to BG2 the duel at L12 to max your fighter HP, get a larger multiplyer on back stab and get the few mage spell stalkers can get

Isn't it best to wait for spells with ranger and then dual to cleric so you will get all the divine spells in the game?

My Fighter/Mage has the +3 Quarter Staff with 2 points in 2 handed and 2 points in Staff and the 18/00 gaunts. He has the highest kill % in my party (which was established when everyone was still level 1.

Staffs can be very powerful even on non-pure Fighters.

    Half-Orc cleric/thief?

This one will be for my neutral party game. I just finnished my evil party game. I want the "staff character" to be for the good party. Also with this character I think I will make my whole party only with light armor.

Right now I really really love the idea of the ranger cleric but it will be awesome to get more ideas. :)

Staff Assassin. In BG2, with the Staff of the Ram and some giant strength belt, you will get to be doing insane backstab damage. Insane.

I thought about it. But I have a problem with pure fighting characters. Nothing really happens when they go up a level they do what they did at 1st level only better.

Ya I understand there I've moved towards more magic oriented characters myself nowadays. I just like the thought of it and had been thinking of it earlier today myself. Especially if you can find a way to combine Kai with Greater Whirlwind once you end up in ToB.

    Good Luck and Good Staffing.

Maybe a barbarian if you prefer not to dual/multi-class.

    .

I think I read somewhere once that the Whirlwinds actually last 10 seconds because of something like a limit on number of attacks you can make per round (so one attack per second) so that would give you some Kai Whirlwinds, though to be honest Improved Haste is usually better.

    Half-Orc cleric/thief?

    Ooh that could be fun.

My Beastmaster will use a staff. He will dual over to Cleric at level 12 or 13, and his only weapon options would be Club, Sling, or Staff, so I chose to have the reach and a bigger stick (not that he is compensating). I like this class because it can specialize in weapons (so it gets a bonus 1/2 attack and the slightly better with the weapon in general), it has some unique features (summon familiar and lots of animal summoning, WOOHOO!), and it can still dual over to an ALL POWERFUL class like Cleric (and that gives you a lot of non-fighting stuff to do too: healing, buff spells, holy smite, etc.) I have been talking about this character almost nonstop in many threads, but I think it is a very fun idea. And hey, a familiar at level one and a good constitution can give you 26 hitpoints at level one!!!

I like the thought of a staff because, as someone mentioned earlier, the guys in Candlekeep used them (except Hull). It makes total sense for a beat stick that wouldn't have to be lethal to enforce the laws, as for the most part the Candlekeep guys were pretty calm and peaceful. Magic Staffs are pretty common IIRC, and you can get an early magical one fairly early in both games.
In Baldur's Gate 1, Silke has one, and in BG:EE Neera has one. In Baldur's Gate 2, there is one in like the third room of Irenicus' Dungeon.

Plus, c'mon, hitting people with a stick is awesome.

Human Kensai 13 -> Thief, grandmastery in staves. With the Staff of the Ram +6 you'll be dealing insane amounts of damage on backstabs and be dealing excellent amounts of damage per regular hit. Even without that Staff, you'll still be doing great damage.

I've actually been playing a berserker dualed into a druid. I like the idea because berserking and animal forms seem to mix pretty good. I've played berserker with staff till level 7 (for the extra half attack) and then dualed to druid which got to level 9. If you put your points right you'll even get to 5 points in quarterstaffs and 1 point in 2h weapon, which gives you crits on 19 and 20.

With this build, you get a pretty good druid with 2,5 (or 3 with boots of speed) attacks per round with the quarterstaff which can berserk when needed. Pretty tough character all around and even though I didn't plan on it when creating him, he's probably very good from a powergamer perspective as well as roleplay perspective.

I feel a bit cheesy playing it sometimes because he's so strong, but it is kinda fun too to have 14-28 damage per hit with a druid too. And as said before, quarterstaff just feels right for a kid that grew up in candlekeep.

Human fighter (or berserker, if they can spec. in staves) 1st level: Quarterstaff ++ Two handed weapon ++ At lvl 3 fighter:Quarterstaff +++, then immediately dual to thief. At lvl 1 thief pick two ranged weapons for back up. Once you are level 4, your fighter levels will be back. Put the proficiency at 4 to staves again to get a total of 4 points in it. At lvl 8 thief, put another and you will have Staff +++++ (grandmastery) Two handed weapon ++ and two ranged weapons to back up. Staves are excellent backstab weapons, and this character will use a staff with uncanny speed and skill with x4 backstab too!

I thought I mentioned this already but another reason bludgeoning weapons are good is that most armor has a bonus to slashing AC but no bonus (and penalties in some cases) against blunt. I think that's why my FM is out damaging Minsc with a 2 hander +2. THAC0's are the same but the blunt weapon character doesn't see the penalties Minsc is seeing.
