Should I be able to choose a kit when I dual class?

in New Players (NO SPOILERS!)
I am trying to dual class Imoen into a specialist mage, but it only allows me to pick 'mage' and I don't get to choose a kit. I see references to making her a specialist mage, and I'm curious if I should be able to do it at the time I dual class her?

    You could dual into a specialist mage in the original BG1 (as long as you met the stat requirements), but since BG:EE uses the BG2 system of treating specialist mages like kits (which cannot be dualed into), you can't anymore.
