Black Pits Tier 3 (I think) *Spoiler*

I was fighting the boss of tier three...I think it was tier three at least, the hill giant or fire giant or whatever it is. I was down to 2 of my chars left and I had my sorcerer kiting him while my cleric kept hitting him with the ring of force or of ram or whatever it is. Every once in awhile I would turn around and huck some +1 darts at the giant and I noticed he has a pretty darn good AC. Granted it was my sorcerer throwing the darts and he didn't have super great thaco (around 14 or 13 I think) but still...look at the size of that giant. How could you possibly miss something that size? You know when people say 'you couldn't hit the broad side of a barn' this whole situation was that pretty much. I can understand the giant having damage reduction (thick skin) but a miss means he evaded the shot...how the hell is that possible? I can't think of how to justify this in my mind from an RP perspective. Any advice or excuses to explain away not being able to hit a 20 foot walking wall?

Armor Class in AD&D is an abstraction that combines several defensive factors. Missing an attack roll doesn't necessarily mean that your target dodged the attack, it could mean that the blow glanced harmlessly off his armor, or that its hide is so thick that the hit failed to do any actual damage.
