Is Faldorn not supposted to be able to wear ankheg?

I thought Druids we're ok to wear natural armors in the old games?

I wanted her as a combat druid but her AC is just too atrocious without ankheg.

Davaeorn was a joke with Viconia though.

I'd like to strike a balance

I think single class druids can only wear up to leather. Jaheira can wear it because she's a mulit-classed fighter/druid I believe.

There's a big ol' debate about who should or should not be able to wear ankheg (and similar "natural" armors). I don't recall whether they could or not in the original game, though; I know that things opened up a bit in BG2, but I don't know how much.

I'm all for Druids being able to wear Ankheg, it's not as if they're cheap and readily available (apart from that one set that everyone knows about)
Edit: or perhaps adding in some snazzy Druid only armour?

I literally just fought Davaeorn and hurled a 100% magic resistant Viconia at him
With a carefully placed dispel she hurled a bullet at him just as he was teleporting to his little alter room
The bullet went through the portal with him and critted him, perfect!

The thing about druid restrictions is that they can't wield or wear anything unnatural. Ankheg plate would be quite natural indeed.

Druids aren't supposed to wear heavier than leather armor. If it was all about being natural, why can they use scimitars?

The exception that proves the rule? ;)

I remember in IWD that a big selling point of Rhino Beetle Tower Shields and Umberhulk platemail was that single class druids could wear them...

Druids could use ankheg plate in BG2, but it's been so long since I played vanilla BG1, that I don't recall if it was usable there. I suppose this was an intentional balancing change, like how they made it non-magical.

Not only could they wear Ankheg in BG2 they could wear Red Dragon Scale as well, even though it is classed as full plate +2.

They can use Scimitars as they are the closest sword type weapon to the Sickles they used for cutting misteltoe, or something like that.

As for scimitars, the apocryphal story is that the scimitar was the closest resemblance to a scythe in the ruleset at the time of their creation. (Scythes being part of the traditional druid regalia).

I also read that the item lists at the time had an abundance of magical scimitars, and that letting Druids use them made them a bit more competitive with clerics.

I was under the impression that druids are able to wear it now. Faldorn has 12 strength, which might prevent her.

Druids were actually just meant as an example if a priest of a specific mythos, which you could create via the rules for specialty priests in the 2E PHB. Shame nothing else ever came from that, as I always found the Druid rather disappointing. Looking forward to Divine Remix getting updated for use with the Enhanced Editions, so I can design my own priests!

I am fairly certain that the Ankheg Armor was wearable by druids in vanilla BG1. If this is no longer the case, they've either intentionally made that change or it is a bug. Perhaps someone should report it in the bug forum and see what sort of response it illicits.

Yes, ankheg plate was wearable by druids in BG and BG2, and a patch has been submitted to make it the same in BGEE.

I already posted it in bugs, it just got ignored. I'm not bothered about the roleplaying arguments on the matter either way, I'm just want to know if it was intended or if it's a bug so I can get on with my game.

I've just stuck with viconia instead of waiting for the answer. Dorn is already making a mockery of every enemy anyway so I don't suppose it matters now :P

Glad to hear they plan on fixing it but in BG1 it isn't that big of a deal. It sucks, but by the time you get faldorn she will have barkskin to use (level 2 has terrible spell choices for druids so she isn't losing much). That provides itself at least some protection.
