Inventory/Quest item problem at end of chapter 5

At the end of chapter 5, Duke Eltan gives you a book to allow your entrance to Candlekeep. My character's inventory was full without my realizing, and it displaced my Jewelry Bag which contained quite a few valuable items. I saved at the entrance to candlekeep, then realized what happened. When I returned to collect the Jewelry bag, it was there, but a number of items inside had disappeared.
My other characters had available inventory slots, so it would be preferred that when given quest items the game would check to see if other characters have available inventory slots. If (heaven forbid) every character should have full inventories the game ought to give you a choice of what to drop, or at the very least give you a warning that something has been dropped.
