Sorry if this has already been discussed before, or if everyone here is already familiar with it, but I just came across this avatar creator page:

You can mix and match your choice of skin color, eyes, hair, nose, ears, and tattoos.

I just used it to create this avatar:

Not sure if I'll actually use it for BG, but I may mess around with creating some more.
