NPC weapon proficiencies

Hi! Can I stop NPCs from automatically progressing in levels if I pick them up say at level one and then dismiss them a little later? I would like to play the beginning of the game with only a party of 2-3, but I don't like the way many of the NPC "screw" with their proficiencies if I pick them up at later levels.

    Non-expert here, but I've noticed there seems to be a method to the madness in the way NPC's work thier weapon proficiencies and what magical weapons are available in the game. Do a bit of research (here and in the many other excellent BG resources) on your NPC's of choice.

    Also, you can change anything you'd like about the NPC's (and charname) with the Shadowkeeper utility. If you are really into BG1-2 this is a very worthwhile tool to learn how to use. It is simple to install and very straight fowrad in operation.

    The answer is yes. If you pick up an NPC at a low level, drop them, and then pick them up at later levels, they won't automatically progress in level. But they also won't gain experience, so if you were expecting to pick them back up and immediately hit the "Level Up" button to assign those extra proficiency points, you're going to be in for a rude awakening. When you pick them back up, and you're level 5, they'll still be at level 1, and will be way behind. Double-edged sword.

    Shadowkeeper is your friend.

    @and_then_or I have been thinking about using Shadowkeeper, but for some reason I don't want to use it for this purpose. I've actually already chosen the NPCs I'm gonna go with so now I'll just have to decide when do I take them with me.

    @Rhyme Thank you. That was exactly what I was hoping for! I want them to be a little lower level than charname when they join permanently so my charname can really shine. And to really make him stand out I've removed the exp cap for the charname class only :)
