Regular Settings Option: Slider Bar for HP at Level Up

BhryaenBhryaen Member Posts: 2,874
This would look like (from left to right):
1- HP is maximized within the character's normal die roll for the class plus modifiers.
2- HP is random within the higher half of the range of a normal die roll for the character's class plus modifiers.
3- HP is entirely random within the range of a normal die roll for the character's class plus modifiers. (DEFAULT)

I only request this to save me the countless hours I will spend rerolling my Level Up until I get the max HP, though I also find it repugnant to think of having endured all that the character has in order to get to another level... only to get 1HP more. Don't ask me why I don't also want this for Attribute rolls at Character Creation because I don't know, but for sure this is a popular tweak that that gets modded into BG.

At present the regular BG Difficulty Settings bundle multiple conditions together, but by bundling them one has to accept a combination of settings that don't necessarily match the player's personal preferences. It would be preferable for customization purposes to "unbundle" them and make them more easily tailored as such. This Feature Request is just such a case.

I would also add an option to maximize the HP of every creature in the game (obviously including CHARNAME and other party members). BG2 Tweak pack has a component that does that, IIRC. I always use it.

I think that instead of a slider it should just be a tickbox in the options menu where the HP is either randomized of maximized (I think IWD2 actually has this already). No need to go overboard on the sliders in this game.

I also agree with @AndreaColombo in that a setting to give all NPCs max HP would be great too. I also always use that component in my installs.

I think putting the game on very easy also maxes hp lvl ups, but I will have to check.

@Cadros Might. I just tried a vanilla BG1 and BG2 game and the difficulty slider doesn't have an explanation for itself. Sheesh, this is a commonality between games past and present, these unspecified difficulty settings... I'm pretty sure that NWN1 maxes level ups by switching to the easiest difficulty setting, but if even if BG has that functionality, what a bother to have to switch it every Level Up. Still, if there's a precedent for the option in BG, all the better for implementation rationale. >:-)

@Bhryaen I guess so, shouldn't be too hard to implement either.

@Bhryaen Actually, in BG2 the settings are described when altering the difficulty slider. And, as you guessed, the behaviour of the HP roll is coupled to it (with Normal or below yielding maximum rolls). I do agree it can be quite bothersome if you prefer to play on Core Rules and powergame at the same time — especially if you forget to set the slider back to Core and end up ignominiously soiling your playthrough. ;)

Since the Overhaul devs are using ToB's engine as a base, I'm guessing this behaviour will be retained.

I do think a separate checkbox option for toggling between maximum and random die rolls is more transparent, however. A slider works, too, if the devs decide to implement a NWN-style option. (BG2 Tweaks' component doesn't work properly for barbarians, IIRC.)

Something else I certainly wouldn't object to would be de-coupling the spell learning mechanism from the difficulty slider. Presenting a separate checkbox option for toggling between automatic spell learning and the INT-based percentage chance would be nice, IMO.

@Igneous Ah, yes, I just tried to load the BG2 game again. When I wrote that I was judging by the auto-BG2Config screen which, in fact, does not show the meaning of the difficulty options. I must have messed up my base BG2 game (pre-mod) somehow (likely by eliminating all the soundsets) because I can't load a game to verify this... and I'm not doing yet another multi-CD vanilla install! :-P

Yes, I read that barbarians had that limitation and was warned against BG2Tweaks, but I've never tried a barbarian anyway, so...

As to "de-coupling the spell learning mechanism," I fully support this, preferring a difficulty options that doesn't bundle disparate game functions into a single slider... *goes to make yet a new Settings Options request...*
