the party member become red when i pick one party member

in New Players (NO SPOILERS!)
i pick some party members like Neera, Jaheira, Khalid,
then all the party member become red,
but if i pick some other members, the party member do not become red,
what does that mean?

    They're half-elves, and thus have Infravision (sort of an infra-red night-vision ability). If you're in the dark, then selecting these characters activates their sight. It doesn't do much, and doesn't mean much.

    Infravision is very important in pen & paper RPGs, but totally useless in this game, because you can see pretty well in dark areas or at night even without. So, if you find potions or scrolls of Infravision the best thing to do is sell them.

    In PNP there are some combat penalties for fighting in the dark without Infravision. Can anyone verify if this was or was not implemented in BG?

    It wasn't, sadly (or maybe not so sadly). Infravision in the BG series only makes it easier for the player to locate targets.
