What class would you make for this party?

Heyo folks,

I picked up BG:EE the other day, and have spent that time rolling up characters, then getting cold feet, without really progressing much in the story. I'm completely stumped as I kind of want to play everything so I'm going to just ask the forums to decide and roll with it. I've played through the Trilogy a ton of times (although it's been a bit since my last play-through) so I don't mind thinking ahead with builds - even though I'll wait for BG2:EE to continue on the char.

The party I'm looking at is : Jaheira (Thinking of subbing in Yeslick later on for her), Dorn, Neira, and Imoen. I'll figure out the last party member when I figure out what I'm going to play (although suggestions with charname welcome).

Caveat: As I'm usually a shorty fan, I'm leaning towards Human, Half-Elf, or Elf for this run.

I'd say a tank or a ranged Charname.

Dwarven Berserker or Elven Stalker/Archer to spark some thought

    Elven Archer

Thanks for the comments folks, that's two votes in a row for Elven Archer. I might have to look into that as I've never played a ranged first class that wasn't a spellcaster. I'm just a little worried that might be a little boring as he just is kind of a turret, right? (Stand and fire and very little interaction?)

Any experiences actually playing one? Or any other ideas?

    Ranged, ranged!

I have played this game dozens of times. In my latest playthrough, I rolled a Fighter specializing in Longbows and it is the most fun I have ever had. Dude is a total beast, too. I really don't think the game is balanced for ranged weapons because you snipe stuff before it even comes close. Of course, I'm also not playing on a difficult setting.

So, yeah, I vote ranged, but I prefer Fighter over Archer.

Good advice. I ended up making a bow user, and I'm pretty blown away by how effective just Charname and Imoen are when working in tandem. I think she has almost 50% of the party kills right now poaching the kill after I light someone up.

Archers are powerful, but very boring. How about a bow-using fighter/mage? Specialize in bows, then choose a melee weapon of your choice for when you find yourself in the thick of things. Much more interesting than a pure archer or fighter, and almost as much natural weapon skill combined with arcane buffs.

going against the tide here: Jaheira and Yeslick can both be used as powerful ranged characters (with slings, as they add str bonus nowadays), but there are better choices for close combat.

imho, go with a berserker 3 -> cleric dual, or something along those lines, and tank everything with Dorn - the game only "hands out" enough gear for two awesomely equipped melee characters anyway. (two +1 AC helmets, 2 boots of speed, 2 +2 prot items, etc)

also, get Coran the first chance you can, and you'll even have archery covered. (plus he's a better archer than... well, anyone, except a full classed elven archer/fighter)

IMHO figther-thief-mage is lots and lots of fun, or just figther-thief

I've actually thought about trying out some sort of melee/divine as a follow-up to my current playthrough, whomping people with a quarterstaff (Edit: Although, using the Stupifier just looks insane as well. That weapon just looks way too good.). Gokke, I'm actually playing a F/T right now as my archer (Arcane Archer in my mind) and dig the hell out of it. I've never really tried a F/M/T as it seemed to me you would just be spread too thin.

It may be a bug (OK, it has to be a bug), but the haste boots currently perm. increasing my attacks along with my speed has been hilarious. It's such a cheat but I can't stop myself, it's like having a machine gun in a world of slingshots.

Try wild mage for additional fun...

Actually played through the entire game as a Wild Mage using TuTu a year or so ago. I loved every minute of it. The Wild Mage really is a mage-sorc hybrid that contains the best of both worlds, and spellcasters are just so friggin' interactive in this game. Love them.
