Keep hitting the space bar like an imbecile and keep reordering till it's right before they're killed. That's Baldur's Gate.

Is this always the case? There were several maps in the original BG where party formation facing was screwed up, but that should be fixed (I didn't encounter any of that anymore). If it still happens, you might want to report the respective areas as bugged.

I've noticed this as well. It seems that the order they enter is based on when they joined the party (the order you get when loading a saved game) rather than any new order you set.

Yes this just happened very noticably to me in the dorn encounter area. No matter how I arranged the portraits, Edwin was always placed closest to the archer bandits, and died many times in a row. Position does seem to be based on order in which they joined your party.

    Auto pause on enemy sighted.

I found that if i line them up in proper order before i port them through a door that in most cases this fixs the issue you are having at least for me it did.

I have no idea if it's the same in BGEE, but at least in IWD2 (same engine) the game had a tendency to sort characters by *joining order* (the order you see the portraits in load game screen) instead of the actual party order - so if you want to "reorder" them, do a quick reform party.

later on it won't be such a problem though - mages'll get mirror images, and your frontliners can grab the two boots of speed in the game to get in the enemy's face quickly enough.
