Questions for blackguard

So, i picked up baldur's gate EE, and I am creating a character. I decided to try out the blackguard, and wanted to make sure i wasn't making stupid mistakes. I heard that if a paladin becomes too evil, they will become a fighter. Is that still true for a blackguard? I didn't see anything that says otherwise. Also, paladins are supposed to benefit from high charisma. Does the blackguard still need high charisma, or could i put points into other stats? Any suggestions for a good weapon to specialize in would also be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

A paladin who drops below 7(?) reputation loses his class abilities, but he doesn't become a fighter. A fallen paladin is worse. He is a figter with higher experience requirements but he is unable to achieve mastery in any weapon. Blackguards on the other hand are not affected by reputation, so do whatever you like.
Blackguards don't need high charisma, and the benefits for high charisma are really weak, the paladin just has a high requirement.
Well the only suggestion I would give to you is: Stay away from katanas, they are really really rare I've seen only one merchant selling them, and I've only found one katana +1 yet.
Small hint classic medieval swords have never been a bad choice in fantasy games.

if you're going blackguard go 2h. Then steal dorn's rancor.

    :)
In all honesty though. with the poison weapon ability it seems to me that blackguards were meant to be DPS.. And since you're playing an evil character you should get kagain and have him be the tank while you demolish everything with 2hs

For a Blackguard, I would most likely use two-handed swords and maces as my weapons. Melee classes always can use a blunt weapon to fall back on against certain monsters who are immune to other attacks, and the stupifier could be the best weapon in BG1, and the mace of disruption is a freaking sanity saver for all the vampires in BG2. I've also liked the idea of running with Dorn - only thing better than one monster DPSer is two! - and having my Blackguard dual wield a mace and warhammer (or flail). You can get the stupifier and electric warhammer really early in the game, and in BG2 you can use MoDisruption and Crom Faeyr (or the Flail of Ages).

Something I noticed is that no matter what weapon you are actually attacking with, if Rancor is equipped (but not selected) you still get the +1 bonus when you kill monsters. Maybe a bug or an oversight, but was great having Spiders Bane working with it.

Statwise, you want : STR as high as you can go, DEX as high as you can go, CON as high as you can go, INT/WIS/CHA do not matter much. You can find tomes that will raise your stats as you play, and there are three Wisdom ones in the game (while the others 'just' have one book) so you can still end up with a average or even decent WIS score if you lower it at char creation.

I'm not 100% sure, but I don't believe Blackguards can fall based on low reputation. It wouldn't make sense if they did, imo.

I'd go with darts, bows, or dual-wielding fast weapons. Poison weapon is grossly overpowered if you have a large number of attacks.

And no, Blackguards have no rep/alignment penalty at all. The Blackguard's extra-planar malefactors don't give a crap what you do with your powers.

Crom Faeyr is pointless to an evil character. It's only useful to a good character (that isn't part cleric, or is an inquisitor since they suck like that) since they can't get that huge +3 str boost for evil only (or turns you permanently evil if you take it anyway). And most characters that might benefit from it, can also cast DUHM, and thus could hit 25 str ANYWAY, without sacrificing 2 great str items to get it.

@mykra im 100% they can't. Im at 3 right now with my assassin and dorn has not fallen.. I've also been as low as one..

I wonder what happens if you reach 17-20 reputation though

He'll leave your party at 18 rep, as do all evil NPCs
