Proper support for two screens

So I have two screens. One built-in 1366x768px, second 1680x1050px on hdmi. I can't get bigger image. All I can have is smaller resolution, even in window mode or when I set my desktop to be on a bigger screen.
My ideas to fix it:
1) Use resolution of the screen that's actually used for display, or biggest res supported by game and not larger than screen's one. Only proportional upscaling, option for no scaling as it looks ugly.
2) Allow user to simply select his resolution from a list, the way BG2 allowed it.
2a) Maybe try to suport older, pre-HD monitors too? Just in case you don't - I can't know if you support 1050 now
EDIT:
If I boot my netbook with external monitor connected and desktop set to display on external monitor, all is OK and I get to use it's full res (or so it seems). Joke is, to boot it with desktop on external monitor I need to shut down it with desktop on external monitor. That's not my usual habit. Usually i shut down it at work or library, and boot at home to play. Now I need to boot it at home, switch desktop to external monitor and reboot to enjoy game in best quality. That reboot shouldn't be needed, right? Windows 7 x64 if that matters.
