Access to Black Pits ???

Been googling / searching / googling / searching

Can't find an answer :

Can the Black Pits be accessed from a location inside BGEE, or is it a completely separate instance, only accessible from the game menu ?

    It is independent of the main story and can only be accessed from the game menu.
