Spell casting permanently disabled

I'm playing a fighter/thief/mage at level 1. I wore armor as I've no spells worth thinking about.
I eventually removed the armour to enable spell casting. No joy.

Observed behaviour: the casting action button is permanently greyed out when armour is removed.
Expected behaviour: casting action button to be enabled when armour is removed.

I have rested, re-rested in every combination of item wearing and still no difference. This has not happened before. So, if it is a bug, it is inconsistent.
Any help appreciated as I don't want to begin again.

    Ignore this. I was trying to be clever by making a berserker and using Shadowkeeper to convert to a mulitclass. Yes, it's a cheat - but I was one of those who voted for multiclasses to have kits. That somehow seems to be linked to the issue.
