Kivan

When I talk to Kivan he says "I don't have time to waste on naive adventures."

Anyone know what the hell this is about? I've never encountered this problem. I want Kivan badly.

    I think you need to pass a reaction check in order to recruit him. You can improve your reaction roll with high charisma or reputation.

    Yep, pretty sure it's your charisma that's the problem. I think the game just checks the charisma of whichever character actually does the talking, so try talking to him with a party member with high CHA.

    You realize that a CHA of 5 is analogous to Puss filled boils on your face and a screaming case of tourrettes, right?

    Basically you are Nober on steroids.

    Be careful later on, Coran might mistake you for a wyvern

    To be fair, there's a number of posts on this board about how useless charisma is, and how you can safely dump it. Of course, if you're familiar with the game, this is true, as you know to talk to people with a high CHA party member or something. But not if you're fairly new to BG.

    charisma under 8 = bad. very, very bad.

    don't do it. there is zero difference between 8-12, so you can use it as somewhat of a dump stat, just don't take it under 8. (or 7 and get charisma tome quickly)

    or 5 (like he has)

    Annnnd

    @Solobear
    Get the charisma tome for +1 cha, and get Algorians Cloak (+2 cha) pick pocket or kill him, he is in the top floor of a inn in Beregost. So you will have +3 cha putting you at 8 cha and you should be much better off when talking with your main character. (Or just talk with someone else as previously mentioned)

    8 actually gives you a small penalty ... but not too bad. It starts getting awful at 7, so I agree with you entirely.

    Can you not just talk to Kivan after making another NPC with better Charisma your party leader temporarily e..g Imoen, Ajantis, Dorn etc.?

    according to the manual, 8 carries zero reaction adjustment... or I have been lied to yet again by it? [shakes fist at manual]

    and yeah, it's just right. my 7 cha character got sent away even by Monty and Xzar when she tried talking to them, but nobody has any problems with 8 cha. (though neither do you get the best rewards, but that's what Coran's for)

    A good rule is to literally never trust the manual about anything.
