Recruiting Evil NPC's - reputation question

Could someone please refresh my memory... ok, I know that if you have an evil NPC in your party and your reputation reaches 18 (or beyond), he/she will leave the group.

My question is: can you recruit an Evil NPC is your reputation is above 18? if yes, will he stay forever or will he leave any time the reputation gets higher? what if reputation is already at 20 and won't go higher, will he leave if I gain anoter rep point from a quest, or will he stay since rep=20 value unchanged?

cheers

They used to join and initiate their leaving dialogue immediately afterwards as far as I remember.

Bugger. Can you think of any RP-compatible way, with a good-aligned PC, to lose reputation in the big city? any silly Flaming Fist mercenary you might accidentally kill because you have a short temper?

There's a Paladin who attacks you if you have evil people in your party (I think), I think you get -3 rep from killing him (he's in a tavern on the same map as the Flaming Fist HQ).

What I ended up doing, starting with a 20 rep and before recruiting the evil NPC In wanted to join, was to travel to Samuel's map at the far south-eastern edge of the map, and force-kill the FF mercenary. Not totally satisfactory RP-wise, but acceptable. My rep took a -10 nosedive (!!) which means that shopping has suddenly become very expensive...

I kept rep around 10-12 in the mixed alignment game I just completed and I was rolling in dough. There's a small fortune of loot in Durlag's.

My shopping is exclusively made of potions and wand/items recharges. Which is a cash-intense activity. Durlag's is on the agenda.

I have dorn in my good party along with Neera, Minsc, Dynaheir, & Imoen, my rep was 18 and i was getting worried about loosing dorn. Luckily for me I strolled into a tavern on the far east side of Baldur's Gate and after sleeping there a Paladin attacked me. You loose 7 rep point btw so be careful..
