yeah but i heard there are several versions of the npcs and they choose the closest rounded down. i was wondering what levels i might find them at when i pick them up so next time i might play with just me and imoen for a while and pick them up at one of these points while they will be very close to me in exp.

As stated in the discussion linked in my previous post, you can also kill and do quest as usual and just avoid to press the button to level up (despite having enough XP to do it) until the desired NPCs have been recruited.

You are always better to get the npcs you want early so you can level them yourself.
