Racial Weapon Types

Hi, I've just seen this mentioned in passing, in an unrelated thread.
Never heard of it before. Do different races get bonuses for using different weapons?
If they do, is this a new thing for BG:EE? Or have it missed this over the years?

Elves are meant to receive a bonus to long swords, short swords and bows. However I believe they are a bit bugged and are currently receiving bonuses on all swords.

Halflings receive a bonus to thrown weapons.

No other race related weapon bonuses are available.

Yes, currently Elves receive a +1THAC0 with *all* swords (including two-handed, katanas, scimitars etc., but not daggers) and all bows, apart from crossbows. If sticking to PnP they should only get the bonus for long and short swords and bows

In BGEE currently, they only get thre +1 THAC0 bonus for slings *and* darts (I've only just realised the latter), though I think (can anyone confirm?) that in PnP they get this with all thrown weapons (daggers, axes, darts, slings), though maybe not axes.

Yet more bonuses for elves. Sigh. Sometimes elves really get on my tits.
I knew of the bonus for bows from ages ago. Didn't know about the swords.

Halfling sling bonus is also news.
I thought the term 'racial weapon bonus' was more encompassing. Surely dwarves would get a bonus for axes and hammers.

Although they don't get the awesome Con-based save bonuses that the shorties get and the 90% resistance to charm/sleep isn't that useful (maybe charm), I can't think of any times an enemy mage has tried to cast Sleep on me...

    Do they in PnP?

Gnomes and crossbows could also make sense

    From 2nd Ed. AD&D PH:
Halflings have a natural talent with slings and thrown weapons. Rock pitching is a favorite sport of many a halfling child. All halflings gain a +1 bonus to their attack rolls when using thrown weapons and slings.

P&P gnomes and dwarves have a +1 bonus to attack rolls against specific creatures (kobolds and goblins for gnomes; orcs, half-orcs, goblins, and hobgoblins for dwarves), but no racial weapon bonuses.

Gnomes have a bonus to Illusion magic instead.

I think there's a mod that implements this (may not work in BGEE yet, though), also halfling bonus/penalty vs. giants

Wait, dwarves don't get a bonus to axes? So I've been self-imposing that stereotype? I'm so ashamed...

In the original rules (basic and Advanced), Elves could not be raised or resurrected. They were also limited in level for certain classes. So they were 'allowed' certain bonuses to make them even out. I think some of that is legacy from that time in the rules set.

Actually, it seems halflings may only get the +1 THAC0 bonus for slings and what is reported on the character sheet for darts is probably a bug, see: http://forum.baldursgate.com/discussion/12372/thac0-window-showing-redundant-data-for-halflings-other-confusing-thac0-for-slings-bonuses

Well they sort of do, in that they are the only class that can be an illusionist/[other class] multiclass, and they receive a bonus to detect illusion (+10 I think).

That's true, and yes they get 10% to Detect Illusion (only when have thief levels, though, of course): http://www.pocketplane.net/volothamp/chap13.htm

Oh, right, I may be confusing it with 3rd Edition rules.
