The secret of BG portraits

You know , I've been thniking about why the original portraits are so interesting, and what's the secret to make custom portraits be as cool. The characteristics that I found were:
1- They aren't posing. I know it sounds silly, but posing centralizes the picture and doesn't make you think "this is a guy who's gonna equip weapons and fight ".
2- They don't look at the "camera"- Ajantis, Khalid, Alora... they are in action, and it makes their pictures really dynamic.
3- Opposing to rule 2, some of them are just staring at you , but they're still not looking at the "camera" . Jaheira , Edwin, Montaron... it feels like they're just looking at you, instead of the "look at me" pose that models do.
I don't know how useful this could be, but I love visual arts and thought it would be nice to share some of the artistic vision that BG artists had when designing their portraits.
