Fighter Proficiency Question

I seem to recall being able to dump all four of my starting proficiencies into a single item in BG and BG2 at first level but cannot now. Is this intentional?

    Edited to remove mistakes TJ_Hooker pointed out:

    In BG2 you can put all 5.

    BG1 vanilla only 2 in one category at level 1, then another at level 3, and another at level 6 meaning that with this creation rule you can't obtain grand mastery until level 9.

    BG2 didn't follow this rule.

    Like moopy said; unable to assign more than 2 points at first level in BG. BG didn't allow any fighter character to attain grand mastery in a weapon. Then Bioware decided to nerf grand mastery. Go figure.

    If you played BGtutu that might explain why you thought you could put all 4 stars into a single proficiency at character creation in BG1, because I'm pretty sure Tutu lets you do that (maybe BGT as well).

    @moopy I just checked and I'm able to put 5 stars into a weapon at character creation in BG2.

    @TJ_Hooker

    You are correct, no idea what I was thinking.

    I would call that a design bug though because there is no way a level 7 fighter could have grand mastery. Given level 1 creation rules from BG1 vanilla you shouldn't be able to obtain grand mastery until level 9.

    It would seem kinda odd if a level 1 character had four slots in a weapon. That's a lot like a 3.5 fighter somehow having Weapon Focus, Weapon Specialization, and Greater Weapon Focus at level 1.

    Yes, it wouldn't seem right that you could master a weapon on level 1. There's only so much you can learn without real combat experience.

    Yeah the lvl1 prof lock is annoying but you can bypass it by dualing into a fighter at lvl 2. I often dual into a ft from lvl2 cleric or thief to get grandmastery at lvl3 and a point or two in weapon styles. And a kit specialty ;D

    In BG1, you (correctly) couldn't put additional points into a weapon if you dualed away from a fighter. BG2 F'd that up, and EE has inherited that flaw and further expanded it by allowing you to place additional points without even getting your abilities back.

    As others have said it would be odd to become a master of a weapon without any actual fighting experience during your time in Candlekeep.

    You did fight... rats, illusions, Reevor...
