    In EE even if you attack an npc directly only they and guards turn hostile. Not sure about enemies aoes though.

    In BG Classic, what the OP describes does happen. if they use AOE, it incurs the same agro as if you use AOE. I've had it happen a couple of times. This, among other reasons is why I target casters very aggressively when fighting in public.
