Help with widescreen mod - Crash on entering Candlekeep map

Hello. This is my first post here.
I'm on my first ever playthrough of the BG1. I'd been running with the widescreen mod at 1920x1080 resoloution for most of the game. It occasionally prevented me from entering places, such as the jovial juggler and the helm and cloak, but either reinstalling at a lower res or uninstalling the widescreen mod fixed that. Now I'm having a problem getting into candlekeep after returining to duke eltan with evidence papers. Since getting the papers I went away and did all of ToSC. Now when I come back, and duke Eltan tries to send me to candlekeep my game goes to the cutscene for the new chapter, and then crashes to a black square. My computer things the game is still running, and keeps a black square open with the same resolution which I was using with the widescreen mod. Walking to candlekeep has the same effect, with the crash immediately after the autosave for entering a new area.
I have tried uninstalling the widescreen mod completely, and reinstalling it with a few different resolutions. Nothing helps.
Before I originally went and did the ToSC stuff, I was successfully teleported to CK, but I loaded it up to just before because I didn't want to do that yet. Now it won't let me in!
Anyone have any idea how I might either fix or get around this problem?
Thanks!

Not sure if it is caused by the widescreen mod or not. I installed the mod before I left candlekeep for the first time, and new games run fine. I went back a couple of times since the beginning of the game just to see if I could go in yet. All with widescreen mode installed. It's just now that it breaks, even when I uninstall the mod.
I should note also that I am not using the enhanced edition, given that this forum comes under the enhanced edition umbrella.
It's actually broken again now, and I've got even less of an idea this time.
When I try to leave the candlekeep caves at the end of Chapter 6, the game autosaves and then I get the message:
'An assertion failed in \dev\Baldur\CVisibility.cpp at line 1484'.
No amount of playing around with the WS mod has got rid of that. I don't think the way I solved the first CK problem will work either. I did that by overwriting the AR2626 file (corresponding to candlekeep after the initial part of the game) in my broken save with one from a brand new save from a new game that I started.
I don't know which area I'm supposed to end up in next. I could try it if I knew where exiting the candlekeep caves is supposed to put me, but it's a different error message, so I'm guessing the same fix won't work.
Update:
Haha!
I looked up where you're supposed to come out of the caves. The same trick worked with the same map, despite the different error message! I'm not sure of the effects of what I've done will be though - the only good CK map I have is the same one I loaded before I went in to CK, so some stuff may be reset.
Anyone know how the gatewarden is supposed to react after you exit the caves? He's just saying to me the old "sorry, no book no entry" spiel.
