What level of zoom do you use?

DerDuKeDerDuKe Member Posts: 88
The new patch brings a lot of awesome stuff (thanks devs and keep up the good work!) but unfortunately it seems like a fixed zoom level is not included, yet. This made me wonder how many people actually use the new zoom feature which comes with BG:EE. I personally like to zoom in a bit (poll option 2) to get a greater feeling of immersion while playing BG on a big screen.

What zoom level do you use? And why?

Greetings,
DerDuKe

I tend to play a lot of squishy casters, so I usually zoom way out so I have the proper view to maneuver them around critters and launch spells and arrow into ze face. However, I do like the ability to be able to zoom in.

I am usually changing my zoom based on the events at hand, so no single answer fits me best

I'm the same way, although my default level is the standard zoom. Sometimes I'll zoom out if I'm in a city or a large map, or in if I'm in a small room or if I'm trying to find easter egg caches.

I'd use max zoom out 100% of the time as soon as a zoom lock is implemented.

As it stands I'm probably at max zoom 90% of the time.

I use the default level for the most part, but sometimes I zoom in super far in order to admire my characters or watch an epic fight.

I meant to actually select between standard and max zoom in. Woops. :)

I liked the zoomed out view because it looks less pixelated, but it seems to change back to the default at times.

I zoom out to the maximum whenever I remember to. In any game with a similar camera I feel disadvantaged not having the camera and maximum zoom, and Baldur's Gate is no different.

The ability to zoom in to get a better, if pixellated, look at something is still great to have though.

I prefer to have it zoomed out.

But there are times, when I want to see every pixel very closely, so I do a max zoom in.

You forgot to add the option: I go batshit crazy and zoom in and out like a ninja! :P
But really... I do zoom in and out depending on the need. My standard is normal zoom.... But I do actually zoom a lot.

2 zoomings (that's totally a word!) with the mouse wheel.

standard zoom, and I fry my party all the goddamn time - learning the radius of a fireball in BG2 to the pixel is nice and all, but *remembering* that it isn't the same in BGEE can be quite... challenging.

shame they didn't add some kind of radius display...

I zoom out occasionally, but playing on the iPad I find zoom in to be useful for targeting and looting. Standard is very, well, standard, so that is used whenever I don't need to zoom in for targeting purposes.

... You know what I just realized? I love the word zoom. I'm currently sitting here saying it over and over again. :D

QFT! This was one of the things I loved about RtToEE. The radius display of anything really.

With a 27" monitor that's the best option.

Up till now I used the standard zoom.. But only because I didn't know you can zoom in or out.. And still I don't know how to do it.. With mouse wheel only? Gotta try tonight...

I think the mouse wheel is the only way to zoom.

I find it pretty interesting that so many people use max zoom out. I understand that this is very useful in terms of tactical gameplay and it does not look so pixelated, but I think the actual gameplay is much more immersive if you can not see the 'whole map' on one screen. What's your opinion on that? Btw I think we all agree on one point (except for @Lifat who "go(es) batshit crazy and zoom(s) in and out like a ninja!"): There should be a zoom lock included (hopefully coming with the next patch).

@DerDuke I may be doing that but that doesn't mean that I'm against people getting a scroll lock. Just because I don't/won't use a specific option doesn't mean that I'm against it. I love options. And at some point I may get tired of scrolling in and out and actually want that lock.

I zoom in and out all the damn time.

Needs an "I don't know" option. Like others in this thread, I also change it constantly, mostly without noticing.

I max out because I don't like the graphics of the game, so smaller images look better. It's not a knock on BG; it's more that the graphics aren't that important, but position of things is. I'd be almost as happy with Dwarven Fortress graphics in BG.

Zoom all the way in and the sprites are painful!

I don't zoom. My zoom button is broken.

"Whataver I prefer at the moment" option is missing...

I will never forget to add a "none of the answeres offered does fit my playstyle" option ever again!

By the way: "Zoom no longer resets to default when transitioning areas" since patch 1.0.2014. Great!

The zoom never defaulted when transitioning areas for me. Instead, it saved the zoom level for each area. Every new area would use the default by... default (Duh).

    I liked it that way.

Prior to this patch the game saved/locked in the zoom level of an area you had already been to and set it at? Was I just not paying attention to that? That's not how it seemed to me, but perhaps Dino is right.

Easy enough to try out, no need for speculation :)

    Oh, wait-

Lol. True. Maybe someone who hasn't patched yet can confirm.
  • DerDuKeDerDuKe Member Posts: 88
I am veeeery sure there was no locking of zoom level prior to this patch. A lot of people demanded such a feature and since this patch it's finally possible!
