Mirror Image spell and Thief Backstab (Bug?)

Noticed this when being attacked by the Cultist in Ulgoth. Mage was mirror imaged, lvl 8 mage, and one of the cultist's thieves seemed unaffected by the spell and simply bypassed my mirrored images to do backstab damage, 30+ damage. I tried this a few times and same thing happened. From what I saw, they weren't rolling natural 20s and it kinda makes mirror image useless in protecting the mage from backstabs.
