Confusion over Steam entitlement...

ReadingRamboReadingRambo Member Posts: 598

What will getting a key on steam actually accomplish? Steam won't fix bugs or create new content for BGEE. It won't make BGEE morph into Baldurs Gate: Super enhanced edition.

I own several games on steam and I like their weekend deals. But when the Steam release news hit I thought "oh, cool" and proceeded to play BGEE without a secon d thought. Why is everyone freaking out to get a steam key? I don't get it. Can someone explain it to me without getting super angry?

Edit: I just realized I probably didn't need to make a new thread about this, sorry.

I assume they just want to have all their games in a single place. I don't really know, but that would seem to be the only logical conclusion.

Some people like to keep all their books in one shelf. It's just a matter of personal taste. And this thread is unnecessary since there are already several threads about the availabilty of BG:EE on steam.

Yep sorry I just realized that literally seconds after I posted it. I'm still kinda new to forum posting and don't have all the etiquette down-pat

I think the reason they want the steam key is because the steam client has a better library than beamdog, a chat option and better download speed. At least those are the reasons I've seen.

I think the people who are raging a bit about the steam keys are overlooking the downside to steam.

The number one downside to steam is that it forces you to have the client open while playing your single-player game. Granted they have an offline option but I've personally had lots of trouble where steam couldn't be started up in offline mode. Suddenly I'm locked out and can't play my games.

The number two downside to steam is that any updates to the game will have to be added by Valve. This will probably mean a delay from when it is released on beamdog. I know that some people said that overhaul promised synchronized updates across platforms. That doesn't mean they promised to synchronize with steam. Btw people seem to overlook that the decision to add it to steam was out of overhauls hands. They weren't even notified before atari made the deal with Valve.

The number three downside is that while having the game on steam might mean a bigger bag of money for overhaul it actually means an even bigger bag of money for valve. To me the developers of the games should be the one to recieve the biggest cut. Not a secondary distributor.

All this said I'm not against people getting steam keys. If they start handing out free steam keys I might even add it myself.
I am against people who think they are entitled to a steam key. Show me a quote where overhaul promised that the game wouldn't be on steam?

I own the ipad version, since i asked for a refund on the pc version because of the bug's in the launch.

Now i think i will buy it again there.

I am so angry at you I must troll you to no ending [inserts swearings from all dialects possible]

Basically Steam allows a great game management interface and download speed. If the game supports save game cloud syn, it's even better. But I got Origin for that.

Since there are already a few threads on this topic, I'm going to close this thread. Feel free to discuss the steam release in one of the existing threads.
