Travel in BG1

I looked around a bit and didn't notice anyone directly asking this... but maybe I missed someone. Eitherway, I recall (although it's been a bit since I've played BG1) that you had to basically exit an area in the direction of a city you wanted to head toward to have that part of the map be accessible, and that this could mean many tedious minutes of walking from one side of an area to completely the other, especially if you were on a "Retrieve This Item For Me!" errand quest. This wasn't an issue in BG2- you could leave an area where ever you like and choose a destination on the map however you wanted so long as it was unlocked to the party. Can travel in BG1:EE work in a similar way to save some walking time?

    @Eleanor

    You only have to exit on a specific side of a map to make the adjacent area appear on your world map the first time. After an area is discovered it works just like BG2.

    Ahh, okay. Thank you for clarifying that for me, I appreciate it.
