Question from a Returning Player

Having been away from the BG series for a while, I thought I'd ask a question or two about how certain things work in BGEE, particularly the bad things like getting killed. :P

Is there a penalty for party member deaths aside from the gold needed to raise them? Since I'm playing on Normal mode permanent death is supposed to be disabled, but I'm worried about the other consequences. For instance, do certain characters leave if they die too many times, or does a character's death break any of the new romances? With the number of reloads I've gone through to keep people alive, I sort of want to just pay the gold to raise them, but I don't want to lose out on anything because I got tired of reloads.

Note: I'm posting here due to the possibility of spoilers, but if this can be answered in a relatively spoiler-free way it might fit better in the "new player" section.

It should just be the cost to raise the party member. If they're turned to stone there's a little more involved but that should be it.

The biggest inconvenience is having to carry their gear back on another character.

Can be answered spoiler-free. You have to pay to raise them and carry their gear. If they get petrified, you can get them back with the stone to flesh scrolls. The only permanent death is getting petrified on a travel encounter, since you can't return to those areas. But so far, I've only met one basilisk on a travel encounter, out of a few hundred, and could blind it before anyone got turned into a statue.

Um, there is one other permanent death. If Charname dies, that is the end. Reload city....

Well, he asked about party members. If Charname dies, they may still live.

    Thanks for the replies.

Yeah, I've suffered from the forced reload on PC death many, many times already... you'd think a Fighter/Cleric would be more than a one hit kill, but...

I also have another quick question: how do the new "romances" work in BGEE? Are they timer-based conversations like the romances from BG2, with some later conversations requiring certain events to have occured? I'm asking because I've seen a total of 2 conversations with companions over 2 days (and 40 game days), and one was a Jaheira/Khalid banter. If it can be answered with a minimum of spoilers (or just a link to a good explanation so I and others can avoid the spoilers), that'd be great.

The "romances" in BG:EE are actually "proto-romances" that tease about hopefully fully realized "romances" in BG2:EE. They both have at most three dialogues apiece.

Neera's ends as soon as you have your first kiss, which will happen fairly early in the game if you're keeping her in your party and being nice to her.

Dorn's ends as soon as you enigmaticallly tell him you could get along with a shadow warrior like him. There is basically nothing there but a vague hint. There are several logical choices in the dialogue screens that will end your chances of seeing the one vaguely romantic hint.

I'd suggest not worrying about it too much. There's really nothing much to see.

Solved my own problem with no conversations appearing with a Google search, as I should have done sooner. Turns out sometimes the conversations for the new characters that are supposed to be triggered after a rest get bugged out, but having the PC use the dialogue action on them afterwards will start the conversation. There's still no indication of whether anything was supposed to happen (and thus time to use the dialogue action), but it's not entirely broken.

Thanks for the heads-up on the romance content, though. Seems like a cool idea to spread the romance across both games... should be interesting to see how that turns out.

Thanks for all the replies! I think I should be able to just Google the rest of my questions, as they're all related to the base BG1 gameplay.
