How do you kill Shandalar?

I wanted to give this a go with a solo f/m/c. I'd just killed Drizzt and I thought, mmm, who next should fear my wrath and ire... So, for no plot reason whatsoever, I reckoned I could shank Shandalar. Turns out he's almost impossible to hit, casts spells uninterrupted, and after a while he dimension doors away.
Has anyone done this? And what is the reward? I know he can be pickpocketed for a good set of level 4 spells.

I saw a video once where someone basically magic-missile barraged him to death. had about 3 mages and someone with a wand to keep the chain going. I've never managed to beat him, myself.

    Maybe this is the video?

Hitting him with a Greater Malison or two right out the gate should make him vulnerable to paralysis or fear...

Huh, I was going to say "with great difficulty", but after seeing that video, I guess not.

That makes it look kind of easy doesn't it.

I just kept trying the wand of paralysis until it hit, then easily dispatched him.

His spells are scripted, so they are cast in a predetermined order and they cannot be interrupted by normal means. The last spell in his sequence make him teleport and disappear permanently.

So to kill him you either must be very fast like in the video above or try and interrupt the spell sequence. The latter can only be achieved by disabling him entirely, for example using a wand of paralysis.

This may require several attempts, but it is quite easy to do, even without lowering his saves, unless of course you're playing a no reload game.

Personally I dropped Doom and Greater Malison on him, then used the Wand of Paralyzation. Works pretty well.

I tried that Magic Missile thing. It doesn't work in Tutu at least. I suspect that was a very early unpatched vanilla game.

In my version he casts Globe of Invulnerability, which blocks the Malison (was this introduced in the latest patch?). Luckily Sorcerous Sundries now sells a scroll of Secret Word.
Secret Word doesn't include removing GoI in it's description but it still did it.
    It ended up being:
    Protection from Electricity.
    Animate Undead
    Shield
Doom: (He then turns hostile and casts GoI)
    Secret Word
    Malison
Wand of Paralysis (about 3 times. Which is what you'd expect. His saves start at 1 ! They got raised to 7 so that is roughly 1/3 of 20)

    Easy, really, after all.

But, without Secret Word, I guess he's near impossible to kill. Just the Doom would raise his saves to 3. That's a 1/7 chance of the wand working.

28000xp. Does that make him the largest xp target in the game?

Wand of Paralysis doesn't cause him to turn hostile, even when successful. It's still awkward going without a party, but with a full army of summons to autohit him with, it should be doable.

I never knew that. So he stands there uninterested as someone tries to paralyse him? While technically viable there is a slight whiff of gorganzola or parmesan about it. (Though had I no alternative I may have tried it).

This, I really wonder why this is never said anywhere in threads where all other methods of cheesines are named. The wand even works on Sarevok but since the scripting in the final battle is a bit weird he won't die until the paralysis wears off.

Yep, this is what I use when I want to pure cheese the fight lol.

For a more legitimate fight, I use something along the lines of what @Ligg suggests... if I feel guilty about gorgonzola'ng him ;)

Actually that puts him on par with Elminster whenever you meet him.

I like to spawn the Godbow whenever he shows up and that's like 3 or 4 times.
