Help with some Chapter 1 Side quests

Hi, I just started playing BGEE this week and used google and FAQs to help, I read somewhere that some new side quests were added into the game, however I have some quests which I have no idea how to go about it, any help with them would be appreciated.

The side quests are:

1. Rising Tensions with Amn

2. The Mage's School

3. Troubles in the Region

4. Dorn Il~Khan

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • Rising Tensions with Amn and Troubles in the Region aren't true sidequests, they just keep track of rumors you've come across. The Dorn one is his personal quest line, so just make sure to recruit him when you get the chance (it isn't when you see him in the Friendly Arm for the first time) and hold on to him if you want to do that.

The Mage's School you could actually complete, but a lot of the journal entries aren't properly moving to the "Done Quests" section when you finish them. Have you brought a book back for the Ulcaster ghost?

on #4 when you head to the nashkel mines that one will work itself out. I advise you just read the quests, and work it out as you go. But if you're dead set on spoilers.... go to gamebanshee.com/baldursgate and click on walkthrough. It has almost every quest / item in almost every area.

Hi Kaigen, from the FAQ I read I can go to the Ulcaster later in the game, but I am not quite sure what to do in Chapter 1 to complete the mage's school? Some specific details as to how to do it would be great. I do not mind a bit of spoilers, just a general detail as to how to go about it.

Check your world map and see if there's a location labeled "Ulcaster" on it. If not, I believe you can get there by going South from the Temple map East of Beregost. On that map is a ghost who you can talk to a few times. Do that, then head into the nearby dungeon and retrieve an old book and bring it back to him. That should complete the quest. Be careful though, that dungeon might be a little tough if you haven't gotten some levels and a couple magic weapons under your belt.

If you need help finding it, here's a link to a map of that area: http://www.gamebanshee.com/baldursgate/walkthroughbgee/ulcaster.php

The ghost and the dungeon entrance are 5 and 6 on the map, respectively, though I think the ghost wanders around a little.

I think there are several later quests that are mentioned early and hence put in journal. Ulcaster is one of them, as is the Firewine Bridge, Bassilus and I think a few others. You probably got the notes from talking to commoners.
These quests aren't expiring; you can just go ahead with your current main quests and get back to those later. Some are not fun on low levels, which I assume you are in chapter 1. So save them up for later when you have the levels and the gear.

Ok so if I complete Ulcaster, does that mean that the Mage's school quest will be updated to completed as well? I personally feel like completing as many side quests as possible to level up to at least level 3 before I start chapter 2 at Nashkel.

The journal is (was?) a bit bugged and some completed quests would stay in the open section. But yeah, completing Ulcaster schould update that quest and depending on your class and party, it's possible to do it on low levels. Just make sure you have a thief to scout for traps in the dungeon, since some can potentially kill you or your party members, especially squishy mages with few hitpoints.
