unarmed vs armed monk?

Gustx8Gustx8 Member Posts: 47
How is it that I do more damage with long sword, one of my proficiencies, than unarmed, which I am suppose to do more damage as a Monk? or am I reading my character sheet wrong? My chance to hit with this long sword is better too. Also, I am assuming that number of attacks 3/2 is referring to the decimal 1.5? So, 1.5 attacks per turn?

EDIT: I just noticed that my AC actually goes down with a long sword as well, because of single handed proficiency.

I think Monks at low level are better with using a weapon, but once your fists start counting as a magic weapon it might be worth starting to go unarmed.

This makes sense. After reading the kit description this seems right.

This. Not only will your fists count as magical weapons, but the damage die goes up (to quite ridiculous amounts if I remember correctly) and you get extra attacks with unarmed that a monk can't get with weapons (only allowed one rank in any weapon/style)

At low level either a weapon & 1-handed style or a missile weapon add to your survivability over unarmed melee.

Monks do not get fists that hit as +1 weapons until BG2 levels (9+). However, they do get 2 attacks and D10 damage per hit by the end of BG:EE, if I remember correctly.

Well the monk should already do more damage with fists, since he get extra attacks if unarmed, assuming that monk is around lvl4. Even more if he has strength >15

    longsword +1 is 5.5dmg*1atk=5.5damage
    fist 4.5dmg*1.5atk =6.75damage

Black Pits has a glove you can import that gives +4 THAC0/+4 Damage to unarmed attacks. If you can deal with Rasaads AC, he'll mess some people up with those gloves - especially if you give him the belt as well (although in my game Yeslick is kinda attached to it.)

I used Rasaad through the whole game, completely using fists. He rocked, once his fists hit 1d10 he's a killing machine... Especially with that belt from his questline ;)

IN BG, always unarmed after level 6, unless you need to +1 to cause damage or want to keep them at range throwing stuff.

To help Rasaad's AC, I give him a point of single weapon style and Twinkle, Drizzt's scimitar that gives -2 AC bonus. If you really want him at decent AC, ring of protection +1 or +2, bracers of Dexterity if no one is using them. That nets anywhere from -4 to -7 AC bonus, and a +3 weapon is good for his THAC0. You could do the same thing with a PC monk, start with 18 dex, and save the bracers for someone else.

Edit: also, until a monk with 18 strength gets the tome, that belt is pretty awesome for 19 strength (unless you like one of the belts of AC vs physical types).
