They are part of a massive three part Easter Egg that won't actually come to fruition until Throne of Bhaal. I never bother.

They are part of an Easter egg that only really matters in the expansion to Baldur's Gate 2. It can be combined with two other items, the silver pantaloons and the bronze pantalettes, to make a giant golem suit that anyone can wear, and a weird grenade launcher. Fun little Easter egg, but it isn't all that important.
Edit: google search for Big Metal Unit will get you the answers you seek.

For just 1 inventory space its worth holding onto in my book its a fun little easter egg and the big metal unit outfit is actually quite good even if it does look a little ridiculous.

Oh word of warning though. You need to be playing fairly evil in BG2 to get the Silver Pantaloons. I won't play evil, so I don't bother with the whole thing.

I thought the method to obtain them was not necessarily evil...
Well you do have to collect a ransom, loose two points of reputation, and fight a group of enforcers. It's just not something I'm ever willing to do.

Its more greedy than evil you dont have to really kill anyone or anything, and besides that your extorting the rich its not like your stealing from the poor.

I only steal from those who try to kill me...

And I'm not willing to loose reputation, ever.

@atcDave - You are stealing from those that try to kill you.

The kidnappers tried to kill you, and you are stealing their ransom! See, everything is morally fine in the end!

Yeah I'll steal from the kidnappers, but not the victim or her family!

You don't have to kill anyone, just start the ransom process and then pickpocket the guy
and walk away. You an even free the woman hostage afterwards, though she will still call you names...
