Steam overwrite

I want to ask someone with higher knowledge than me before destroying my BGEE Steam installation.

If I overwrite the files in "steam/steamapps/common/Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition" folder with the files downloaded via Beamdog....it will work? would steam recognize the game as if it was the steam version since the filenames are the same?

    The transplant was a success. Now I have the 2012 version on Steam. And Steam semms to be ok with that, no compains about the version or file integrity, no updating attempts...
